TUCSON, Ariz – Late in the fourth quarter, the tank was on empty for the Hawkeyes.
In a statement game for No. 24 Arizona, No. 9 Iowa fell behind early, to eventually lose 34-27 on Saturday night.
Down 20 in the 3rd quarter, Iowa scored 20 unanswered points to tie the game midway through the fourth quarter. The Hawks last touchdown came when defensive lineman Broderick Binns returned an interception 20 yards for a touchdown, but Iowa missed the extra point. The game was tied at 27 a piece.
On the following drive, Arizona (3-0) took it 72-yard in nine plays, ending it when Nick Foles hit William Wright with a threaded needle for a 5-yard touchdown.
Down seven with 3:57 left in the game, Iowa tried to respond, but couldn't muster any offense, as Ricky Stanzi was sacked four times in a row by blitzing Wildcats. Stanzi was sent to the ground a total of six times in the game.
Iowa's troubles started early in the game, when on their first drive punter Ryan Donahue's kick was blocked, setting up Arizona with a first down and goal.
On Iowa's next possession, quarterback Ricky Stanzi's pass was intercepted by Trevin Wade at the Arizona 15, it was returned 85-yards for a touchdown, putting Iowa in an early 14-0 deficit.
Iowa was finally able to find the end zone at the start the 2nd quarter. Iowa had a nine play, 93-yard drive capped off by a short Jewel Hampton touchdown to make the game 14-7. But, Arizona's Michael Meyer returned the kick 70-yards, to give the Wildcats all the momentum back.
Iowa was out-gained 366 yards to 289, and only managed 29 yards on the ground. Ricky Stanzi was 17/32 through the air for 260 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception.
Playing in his second game in two years, Jewel Hampton led Iowa's rushing attack with seven carries for 30 yards. Hampton, went down in the 3rd quarter and all indications were that the Iowa medical staff was checking his left knee. Coach Feretz said in his post game press conference that the knee would be evaluated when they returned to Iowa City.
