Through 10 regular season games this season, Denton Ryan's (TX) defense was tough. The Raiders only gave up 11.2 points per game and a large reason why was junior linebacker Alex De La Torre. After earning All-State honors in Texas 4A football as a sophomore, De La Torre was even better in 2010.
"There has been tremendous growth, mentally and physically. I feel as if I am a veteran and everything seems more familiar. Being in these situations, like I was last year, has made me a more calmer and better player," De Lat Torre told HawkeyeInsider.com on Saturday afternoon. "As a team coming into spring, we knew we were going to be as good. But, as summer started and the season started to roll around, we clicked and knew we were going to be pretty special."
Ryan is currently 13-0 and in the 4A state quarter-finals. They will take on Rider this upcoming Saturday. Rider is currently 9-4 on the season, but has won six straight. The two met earlier in the year, with Ryan taking the 35-14 win.
Right now, Texas stands out along with Iowa, TCU, LSU, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma for De La Torre. He already has visited Austin and plans to visit more schools in the spring.
"I haven't been anywhere lately. The high school playoffs takes a lot of your time," said the junior. "I might be visiting Iowa in the spring when I get some more time to focus on my recruiting."
It's been no secret that De La Torre favors the Longhorns at this point, but is remaining open to all schools. While he is one of the top defensive products in the state of Texas for the 2012 class, there is no guarantee he will get an offer from Mack Brown and crew.
Much like Iowa, the Longhorns struggled in 2010 after high expectations. They missed their first bowl game since 1997.
"Every team hits a dry spell, I see the recruits they get and they will come back strong. My mind is not affected by any of it," said the junior.
De La Torre plays alongside 5-star defensive end Mario Edwards, who is expected to be considered as one of the nation's top players in the 2011 class.
The Denton Ryan defense has been spectator in 2010 and a large part of it is due to junior linebacker Alex De La Torre. Come inside for the latest on his recruiting, including does he plan to visit Iowa? Plus, what does he think of the Texas Longhorn's season?
