San Antonio, TX – Rodney Coe has a sense of responsibility this week. He's the only high school All-American representing the Iowa Hawkeyes in San Antonio for the Army All-American game.
“A lot of guys are going to Texas and stuff like that, so I have a little extra pep in my step knowing that I'm only the Iowa commitment,” said Coe to HI after one of the running backs practices this week. “I feel like I have to come out and represent the black and gold. I take a lot of pride in that. It's what I can do for the Hawks.”
While Coe will be heading to Iowa in the summer to compete at the running back position, this week he is representing the Army East squad as an outside linebacker, a position he is not very familiar with. At Edwardsville HS in Illinois, Coe is a middle linebacker on defense.
“The week has been pretty good. The first practice sort of started off rough, but a couple days getting the feel of things has helped. I have gotten to go against quite a few great people, so I'm just trying to enjoy it.
“Being from Illinois, I do get to play against some pretty solid competition, but the thing different here is you are playing against the best. In Illinois, I'm not always playing against guys my size. Here they are as big or bigger than me. It's also a speed thing. Overall it's just a different level of play down here.”
While Coe will not register a carry all week, it doesn't mean he hasn't take away anything that will help him as a running back at the next level.
“You can learn a lot of stuff coming to a place like this. Watching the other guys you can pick up things they do. As a linebacker I have been able to watch the running backs quite a bit,” said Coe. “It's good. I will always remember things I have learned from this week.”
Arriving last Sunday, Coe has been rooming with future competition.
“I have been rooming with Brian Bobek. He's a really good guy. I didn't know that he was going to Ohio State. He had it all over his laptop. So we started talking a little trash and how we are going to go against each other in the future. It was nice to meet some guys that I'm going to be playing against in the future.”
More to come on Rodney Coe from San Antonio in the near future.
