HAWKEYES TO THE NFL

IOWA CITY, IA – A record-tying five University of Iowa football players were taken in last weekend's National Football League draft. And, another five players have signed as free agents with NFL teams.

Drafted were tight end Dallas Clark (1st round, Indianapolis), offensive lineman Eric Steinbach (2nd round, Cincinnati), offensive lineman Bruce Nelson (2nd round, Carolina), defensive back Derek Pagel (5th round, New York Jets), and offensive lineman Ben Sobieski (5th round, Buffalo).

The 1984 and 1986 Iowa teams also had five players taken in the draft. But that was at a time when there were 12 rounds in the selection process. Iowa has never had five players taken in the first five rounds.

Five other seniors signed free agent contracts. They are quarterback Brad Banks (Washington), offensive lineman David Porter (Green Bay), linebacker Fred Barr (Tennessee), defensive tackle Colin Cole (Minnesota) and wide receiver C.J. Jones (Cleveland).
