While some schools feel like specialists should walk-on and earn scholarships, Ferentz and his staff target prospects and pay for their schooling.
Connor Kornbrath learned that on Friday when he received and accepted a scholarship offer from Iowa. The West Virginia punter had interest from West Virginia, Maryland, Pittsburgh and others, but the Hawkeyes were the first to offer.
As a junior, the 6-foot-7, 210-pounder led all state kickers in scoring at 4.8 points per game, making seven of 12 field goals, including a school record 51-yarder and a state playoff record 47-yarder. He recorded 19 touchbacks, tops in the state.
Iowa could go into the 2012 season with two punters on scholarship. Jonny Mullings will be a redshirt freshman this fall.
Hawkeye Insider spoke with Kornbrath and filed this feature story.
