After playing on Thursday himself, Grand Blanc's Luke Maclean spent the last two days checking out Michigan and Michigan State, two schools that are recruiting the 6'4, 235-lb junior linebacker. He started out with the Spartans on Friday night.
"It was very crazy," he said. "The student section at MSU, I swear to God, is probably a quarter of the stadium. It was crazy to see nothing but green. It was under lights, at night, and it was my first night game at a college, and that in itself was spectacular."
In addition to soaking up the atmosphere of opening night in East Lansing, Maclean also had a chance to talk to the coaches.
"I got to go down to locker room after the game and talk to Coach Narduzzi and Coach Dantonio for a minute and talk to the secondary coach. It was great to see all those coaches."
Maclean currently holds an offer from Buffalo, which he earned at their camp over the summer, and with his strong start to this season so far, there is a chance that more will come.
"[Michigan State] said they would absolutely like to see my three to four game highlight film from this year and if they see something good, then good things will happen from there. I'm really excited to send in those highlights around game four and see what happens."
Then on Saturday, it was over to Ann Arbor, where Maclean saw the Michigan Wolverines.
"It was an intense atmosphere. There are just so many fans. Every time they do a cheer, it rattles you. It was so good to see old school, Brady Hoke, power offense, smash mouth football. It was great."
Although the game was cut short due to weather, Maclean did get a brief opportunity to talk to the coaches.
"Yeah, I got to say hello and shake hands with a couple coaches, Coach Singletary, I got to talk to him for a little bit. It was not not too much, because they mostly were focused on the game and usually you talk to coaches afterwards, but it got canceled."
Maclean says that's alright, because he will be back to Ann Arbor and East Lansing sometime this year.
"I know I'll be back to Michigan and Michigan State. Coach Narduzzi said I can come to as many home games as I want, so I'll be back for the Michigan-Michigan State game and I'll be going down to South Bend sometime soon. It's a drive, so I have to figure when it works in my schedule. And I might try traveling, but I don't know."
September 1st, the day juniors can be contacted by schools, brought about a whole new bunch of schools interested in Maclean.
"There were so many schools that day. Florida State, Boston College, Virginia, Iowa, I got a lot more stuff from Michigan State and Michigan too, Vanderbilt sent a lot of messages from coaches and Penn State, I got more stuff from them on Facebook. It was a surprise from that day and the day afterwards, it just kept rolling in like mail."
