Raymon Leaving Iowa

John Raymon has decided to leave the Iowa program and transfer to a school closer to his eastern Pennsylvania home. The true freshman spoke to Hawkeye Insider about his decision and where he might end up.

After losing three players in the NFL Draft in April, the Iowa defensive line went into rebuild mode. That process took a hit recently when true freshman John Raymon was dismissed from the team last week so he could transfer to a school closer to home.

"Things just didn't work out at Iowa," the 6-foot-5, 240-pounder said. "They wanted me to stay and play at Iowa, but things just didn't work out. They told me that they hoped things would work out at another school."

Raymon suffered an injury in August camp and never got back on the field. He thought about leaving last month, but decided to stick it out at the encouragement of the Iowa coaches and his guardians. This time, however, his mind was made up.

"Mainly, I need to be closer to home," said Raymon, who is back in Pennsylvania.

Iowa has not released Raymon from his scholarship. He planned to return to Iowa City soon to fill out the paperwork for that to happen. He can't speak to other schools until that happens.

"I'm looking to go to the Big East or ACC," Raymon said. "I'm thinking about WVU, Pitt and N.C. State. Maybe it will be another Big Ten school."

Iowa can put restrictions on Raymon's scholarship release. The Hawkeyes could prohibit him from transferring to a certain school(s). If he moves within conference, he'd have to pay his way.

"I pretty sure the release will clear me to go anywhere," Raymon said.

Raymon's exit added to recent attrition on the Iowa defensive line. He joined Donovan Johnson (2010 class), Anthony Ferguson Jr ('10), Tyler Harrell ('09), Marty Hopkins ('09), Scott Covert ('09) and Jason Semmes ('08) in the group of scholarship front men to have left the Hawkeyes.
