Derby to Coffeyville Publisher

After a short stint at linebacker for Iowa, A.J. Derby will return to his comfortable spot under center. The former Hawkeye transferred to Coffeyville Community College where he will play quarterback.

After switching from quarterback to linebacker at Iowa last season, Iowa City native A.J. Derby will move back to being a signal caller at his new school - Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.

Coffeyville Coach Aaron Flores confirmed via text message Monday morning that the former U.S. Army All-American had joined his program as a quarterback. The college's director of admissions, Kelli Bauer, said that Derby was enrolled in classes at the school.

Derby can join the football program right away and play this fall. He would then retain two years of eligibility at the four-year school to which he decides to transfer.

Derby graduated at Iowa City High midway through his senior year and enrolled at Iowa in January of 2010. He switched to linebacker half way through this past season.

"I'd like to thank the University of Iowa and football coaches for the opportunity," said in a press release on Jan. 17. "I especially wish my brother (Zach Derby, a senior-to-be tight end with the hawkers) the best of luck in the coming year. I will miss all of my teammates, family, and friends who have supported me here. Good luck to everybody.

"Once a Hawk, always a Hawk."

After redshirting during the '10 season, Derby rose to No. 2 on the Iowa depth chart behind James Vandenberg last summer. He completed 3-of-6 passes for 30 yards during mop-up duty in a couple of early-year blowouts.

Derby was arrested in early October for for fourth-degree criminal mischief and public intoxication. After serving a two-game suspension he was asked to move to linebacker and made a tackle on his first special teams' play.

Derby was unavailable for comment Monday morning. Flores said he would return a phone call this afternoon when he's finished with some in-home recruiting visits for Coffeyville.
