Colin McGovern boasts scholarship offers from some of the top college football programs in the country. Defending National Champion Alabama and Ohio State head an impressive list of schools in the hunt for the Class of 2013 Illinois standout.
Despite the attention of the blue bloods, the 6-foot-6, 280-pound offensive tackle is keeping an open mind. Less-publicized colleges like Iowa stand a fighting chance in the pursuit of McGovern.
"Education is the most important thing to me," he said. "I'm looking to become an engineer, so knowing that (Iowa's) engineering program is very outstanding that keeps them in the loop. I also know that they put a lot of O-linemen into the NFL, so that's a plus, too."
In addition to the Hawkeyes, Ohio State and Alabama, McGovern claims offers from Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Nebraska, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Purdue, Tennessee, Washington, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
McGovern had been leaning towards choosing a school relatively early in the process. He's moved off of the position to a degree.
"I'm thinking that I might want to take a few officials just to see the other side of things," the Lincoln-Way West (New Lenox, IL) junior said. "I'm definitely not going to go up to the signing day, though."
Before making his decision, McGovern hopes to visit Iowa City and learn more about the Hawkeyes.
"I haven't really talked with the coaches that much so I don't have that strong of a relationship with them yet," he said. "But I'm definitely interested in getting out to Iowa and seeing what they have to offer."
