Iowa has enjoyed success with players who have grown up on farms. Wrestlers also have excelled with the Hawkeyes. In newest commitment, Nathan Bazata, they got both.
The 6-foot-2, 275-pound lineman from Howells (NE) High pledged to the Hawkeyes on Sunday. He became the fifth known verbal commitment in the 2013 Class.
"Coach (Reese) Morgan and Coach (Kirk) Ferentz said they have success with those types of guys because they know the meaning of hard work," Bazata said. "That's what they've been telling me that they really like about me the whole time they've been recruiting me."
Bazata said he also held an offer from South Dakota State and was hearing from Nebraska and Kansas State. He wasn't interested in letting the recruiting process go on, however.
"I feel very strong about Iowa," Bazata said. "I'm positive that's where I want to be."
Bazata said that will be the case even if the home-state Huskers offer him a scholarship.
"I don't see me changing my mind," he said.
The Hawkeyes signed another Nebraska eight-man football standout in their 2012 class in Drew Ott. They also took Iowa eight-man star Nate Meier in February.
Bazata visited Iowa City on Thursday. It was his fifth unofficial trip to see the Hawkeyes, which included a camp he attended last summer.
"I decided (on Iowa early Sunday afternoon)," Bazata said. "It just felt like home there. The people are nice. The coaches are awesome. I love it there."
Time will tell at what position Iowa fans will see Bazata.
"Reese Morgan is my recruiting coach and he says he thinks I'll be a D-tackle," he said. "He told me that Brian Ferentz would like to look at me on offense line, too. So, they don't really know for sure.
"I feel more comfortable playing defensive line. I've been told I'm more natural there."
Bazata puts the shot and throws the disc for the Howells track team. He's undecided on a college major. He's interested in business and teaching.
Bazata joined David Kenney, Derrick Willies, Delano Hill and Colin Goebel as Iowa verbals in the '13 class. The Hawkeyes received just one commitment (Mitch Keppy) before June 20 last year.
