Still Committed

Indiana recently hired the father of Iowa verbal commitment David Kenney Jr. Kenney Sr. said on Monday that his new employment hasn't changed his son's pledge to the Hawkeyes

When David Kenney Sr. was hired by Indiana recently, it raised concern in the Iowa fan base. His son, David Jr., verbally committed to the Hawkeyes back in April.

Kenney Sr. said Monday that his new employment has not changed his son's pledge to Iowa.

"I told (Iowa Assistant) Coach (Eric) Johnson that Dave is still committed," Kenney Sr. said. "Kids change their minds, but I've always been one to say that you be a man of your word. I raised him that way."

Kenney Sr. coached the defensive line at Butler for five years before sitting on the sidelines in 2011. Previously, he coached high schools in the Indianapolis area for five seasons. He's done an internship with the Colts and has scheduled the same thing with the New York Giants.

Indiana hired him as a quality control assistant for recruiting.

"I had an opportunity to get back into college football and I took it," Kenney Sr. said. "The more you stay out, the more irrelevant you become. (Indiana) Coach (Kevin) Wilson told me that he wasn't hiring me because of my son. I took the man at his word.

"He said he wanted someone with an Indianapolis background, which I have. I've been here for a long time. I know a lot of kids here. I have a lot of relationships. I know coaches."

Kenney Jr. became Iowa's first verbal commitment in the Class of 2013 when he made his choice on April 4. Scout.com has tabbed him as a four-star recruit, the No. 26-ranked defensive end nationally in his class.

Kenney Sr. showed his Butler players and his son film of the Iowa defensive line throughout the years. He used it as a teaching tool.

"If I were his position coach, it might be different," Kenney Sr. said of his son. "I'm not. It wouldn't be an on-field relationship. David is still committed to Iowa and I have a job to do. That's about it."
