Coming of Age

When Don Shumpert arrived at Iowa, he brought with him strong potential. It appears as if the true junior might be ready to hit his stride at Iowa.

Iowa CITY, Iowa - Kirk Ferentz mentioned Don Shumpert's improvement during media day. Iowa's head coach never has gone out of his way to single out a player until he earns it.

Then, the Big Ten Network's Dave Revsine tweeted yesterday - Just spoke (with Iowa WR Coach) Erik Campbell - says Don Shumpert has really emerged…

One of the unanswered questions going into 2012 was who would emerge at the third wide receiver spot. Perhaps Shumpert will be the correct response.

"Don was kind of lost out there the first couple days, really didn't stand out," Ferentz said. "Then as the spring went on got a little bit better. Then you're hearing feedback during the course of the summer that he was having a good summer, and so far it looks like he's doing a good job."

The true junior from St. Louis still is looking for his first college reception after being used mostly on special teams in his first two seasons.

"When you first get here, there's a lot of stuff thrown at you," the 6-foot-3, 190-pounder said. "You have to think a lot. As you get older, the game slows down for you.

"You read defenses better and are just a smarter player overall."

Shumpert can get deep. He believes he's the fastest Hawkeye on the roster this season.

"I run a 4.4 at least," he said. "I think I can stretch the field and use my speed," Shumpert said. "I also think I can read defenses."

Shumpert said that he has added 20 pounds since arriving at Iowa.

Guys like Jacob Hillyer, Steven Staggs and some true freshmen are in the mix for playing time along with Shumpert.

"We all push each other," Shumpert said. "We're all fighting for a job."
