Nebraska started the Tim Miles with a victory on Sunday night.

LINCOLN, Neb. - In his first regular season game as head coach, Tim Miles led the Nebraska Cornhuskers to a 66-55 win over the Southern University Jaguars.

“I was just excited to coach game,” said Miles. “We really want to come through for our fans and show them we can build a winner.”

In what is expected to be an up and down season for the Huskers, Miles' squad came out firing Sunday night. The first half was dominated by senior Dylan Talley and sophomore Ray Gallegos, who scored 21 of the team's 31 points in the half. Talley would finish with 17 while Gallegos scored a career high 16 in his first career start.

“Those three seniors and Ray are going to have to be our go to guys,” said Miles. “Ray’s got such great athleticism. He’s got a nice shot, he’s just got to figure out how to get fouled.”

During the entire game, the Huskers were led by forward Brandon Ubel, who did his damage in the second half, scoring 17 of his 21 points. The senior also finished with 12 rebounds – both were career highs.

“Looking around, we have to have guys step up and score, and I think that I am one of those guys,” said Ubel. “Coach Miles challenged me and Andre (Almeida) at half time, saying those guys really couldn’t guard us in the post if we really demanded the ball.”

While the Huskers did shot over 50 percent from the field, they did have their struggles at times with Southern's pressure. It's an area Miles with address going forward.

“We have to do a better job of handling pressure. I don’t think we can expect any one guard to come down this year and get us organized,” said Miles.

Guard Mike Peltz, Trevor Menke and Benny Parker combined for eight points at the point guard position.

Nebraska has now won 23 straight home openers.

The Huskers are back in action Thursday night, as they take on Valparaiso, at 8pm, at the Devaney Center.
