Greg Garmon said on Wednesday that he asked for and was granted his release from Iowa. The freshman running back played a reserve role for the Hawkeyes in 2012.

Greg Garmon decided on Wednesday that he would be more comfortable at a school other than Iowa. The true freshman running back from Pennsylvania asked for and was granted his release from the school.

"It was great to be a Hawkeye," Greg Garmon said. "Best fans in the country. It just wasn't a fit for me."

Garmon was given an unconditional release according to his father, Tony Hollingsworth, who said his son met with Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz and running backs coach Lester Erb Wednesday before the release was granted.

"It was a good meeting (with Ferentz),' Hollingsworth said. "They agreed that it wasn't a good fit at Iowa. (Ferentz) told him that he had his blessing and he wished him the best wherever he ended up."

Garmon's future destination is pretty wide open at this point, Hollingsworth said. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound running back would have to sit out a season if he transferred to an FBS school but could play right away at the FCS level or lower. Either way, he retains three years of eligibility.

"We're really not sure what's next," Hollingsworth said. "We've never been through this before."

Hollingsworth said he encouraged his son to stick it out at Iowa.

"We thought he was going to come home for the holiday and we would talk it over," Hollingsworth said. "His mother and I wanted him to stay out and try to make it work. He didn't feel that way."

Garmon became the fourth scholarship running back to leave Iowa since the start of the calendar year. Leading rusher Marcus Coker and Mika'il McCall exited last winter. De'Andre Johnson was kicked off the team after a few legal run-ins.

Garmon, from Erie's McDowell High, rushed 38 times for 122 yards this fall. He also caught eight passes for 57 yards.

Scout.com ranked Garmon as a four-star recruit and its No. 15 running back nationally in the 2012 recruiting class. He held an impressive group of scholarship offers, including Arkansas, Florida State, Miami, Michigan and Ohio State.
