Ways Feels Blessed By First Offer

Detroit Country Day (Mich.) junior wide receiver Maurice Ways talks about his first offer and the other schools that have stopped by to see him.

At 6'4, 190-lbs with good ball skills and a good looking highlight tape, it seemed like only a matter of time before Detroit Country Day's Maurice Ways received an offer.

On Wednesday, it happened for him as the University of Toledo became the first program, and likely not the last, to put one on the table.

"I'm very happy, very blessed," he said of the offer.

The offer was presented in person.

"They came by the school today. Coach Campbell and Coach Saia came. They met me. That was the first time we had contact. We had no contact before today. It was our first encounter."

The Rockets also spoke with Ways' coaches and let them know what they thought of their star pass catcher.

"He said he enjoyed my highlight tape and it was very exciting and fun watching me make exciting plays. They talked about the program, how they won 16 MAC championships, 13 bowl games, they love to throw the ball. They said, we know big schools will come after you, but we want to be the first ones."

Ways was invited to the Rocket Junior Day which takes place in a few weeks and he is likely to take them up on that invitation.

Other schools who have shown interest include USC, Ohio State, who he visited in the fall, and several others who came by the school.

"Yeah, Iowa stopped by a couple weeks ago, and Central Michigan came by last week and then Toledo came by today. Michigan State, Coach Salem, said next junior day, they'll let me know and I can make a trip down there."

The Rockets struck first with an offer though, and they have also offered Ways' quarterback Tyler Wiegers.

When asked if he and Wiegers have talked about playing together in college, Ways responded, "Not really, today, when the offer was out, he said congrats, but we haven't sat down and talked about it. I'm sure that conversation will come up in the near future."
