Iowa Lands Jones

Iowa picked up a commitment from Texas wide receiver Anjeus Jones on Sunday.

Anjeus Jones wasn't sold on Iowa before taking his official visit there this weekend. Head Coach Kirk Ferentz convinced the Texas receiver that he needed to be a Hawkeye.

"I was talking to him and when I looked in his eyes I could tell he was sincere and really wanted me to be a part of the family," Jones said.

The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Jones verbally committed to Colorado State two weeks ago. Before that, he was a New Mexico State pledge. He also received a Texas Tech offer last week but decided not to visit Lubbock.

"I wanted to be in a pro style offense," Jones said about choosing Iowa and not looking at the Red Raiders, who run a spread.

Jones, who played at South Oak Cliff High in the Dallas Area, said Iowa's academics and the Hawkeyes membership in the Big Ten weighed heavily into his decision.

"The players act like a family," he said. "The strength and conditioning coach (Chris Doyle) also is one of the best in the nation. I wouldn't mind putting on 30 or 40 pounds.

"I want to be the big receiver where they have to deal with my size and speed. They want me to stretch the field."

Jones still is developing as a receiver after not having a position coach until this fall.

"I feel like the sky is the limit for me," Jones said.

Kevonte Martin-Manley played host to Jones on his Iowa visit.

"We talked about how you have to stay focused," Jones said. "He told me that you have to deal with the distractions that are there. It's easy to get off track, but you have to have that strong mind.

"You're here for a reason - to take care of business."

Assistant LeVar Woods led Iowa's recruitment of Jones, staying involved with the wideout until he got the OK from Ferentz to offer him a scholarship this week.

"Coach Woods was a big part of it," Jones said. "He came to see me so much. He let me know that I'm important to them."

Jones, who intends to study sports management in college, went from off the recruiting radar before his senior season to a scholarship from a Big Ten university.

"It's been a blessing," he said. "I've just been thankful. I've been soaking it all in. I will never forget how I got here.

"I'm real hungry. I'm starving almost."
