Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz named his starting quarterback on Friday, eight days before the season-opener against Northern Illinois at Kinnick Stadium. Redshirt sophomore Jake Rudock emerged from the three-man competition as the winner.
Rudock, the No. 2 all last season behind starter James Vandenberg, bested redshirt junior Cody Sokol and second-year freshman C.J. Beathard this month.
None of the quarterbacks on Iowa's roster has taken a Division I snap. Sokol played junior college ball in Arizona.
Here's a look at Rudock at last Saturday's Kids Day:
The 6-foot-3, 205-pound Rudock hails from Weston, FL and the famed Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas program. The school won the mythical national championship with a 15-0 record his senior season when he was named the South Florida Player of the Year by the South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper.
The rest of Iowa's depth chart for the Northern Illinois game was expected to be released Friday afternoon, according to the school's Twitter account.
