Spencer Haldeman had visited several schools before stopping at Iowa earlier this month. His connection with Hawkeye Head Coach Fran McCaffery differed from what he found elsewhere.
"We just talked about the summer and how he was impressed with my play," Haldeman said, "He said they would keep in touch. And I know Conner and Patrick, his sons, so we talked about them a little bit, too."
Conner McCaffery, a freshman at Iowa City West High, is an AAU teammate of Haldeman's on the Iowa Barnstormers.
Haldeman (6-1, 150) enjoyed a strong sophomore season at Western Dubuque last winter. The Class of 2015 guard followed it up with an impressive Barnstormers' run.
Northern Iowa, Loyola and Albany played host to Haldeman on unofficial visits. His stop at Iowa was his first there.
"I really enjoyed the visit," he said. "They showed me around the new facilities that were just built and those were really nice. I thought the coaches were really nice.
"Coach (Kirk) Speraw showed me around and it was nice getting to know him. Also, I thought the practice gym and weight room were awesome."
Being an in-state player, Haldeman knows the Hawkeyes well.
"I really think they are going in the right direction," he said. "Coach McCaffery is really turning it around. I think their fast style of play fits me pretty well because on the Barnstormers and even my high school team we do a lot of transition. I also like how much emphasis they put on defense."
In addition to the schools he has visited, Haldeman said he is hearing from programs like Drake, Indiana State, Lehigh, Creighton, Northern Colorado, Colgate, St. Joe's and Columbia along with some strong D-II colleges.
"I'm looking for a program where the players and coaches are close," Haldeman said. " I also want a program that will fit my style of play.
Haldeman said he is considering a business major.
"I think I shoot the ball well," he said. "I am definitely working on my strength and putting my main focus on that in the off season. I have also been tightening up my ball handling and working on my pull up jumper."
