Iowa CITY, Iowa - The Rob Report is back for its 11th season of Iowa Hawkeyes football. Today we look at the 59-3 Week 4 win against Western Michigan University at Kinnick Stadium.
Jordan Lomax remained out of the Hawkeye lineup for a third week in a row after injuring his hamstring in Game 1. True freshman Desmond King started once again in his place at cornerback.
Running back Michael Malloy did not dress. He's missed the first four games for an undisclosed medical issue, according to Coach Kirk Ferentz.
-Reggie Spearman became the fourth true freshman to see action for Iowa this season. The linebacker from Chicago worked on special teams and at linebacker and joined Desmond King, LeShun Daniels and Matt Vandeberg as first-year players to have their redshirts removed.
Spearman is the youngest player on the Hawkeye roster, having turned 17 on Aug. 17.
-Representatives from the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl were in the Kinnick press box Saturday. The game is played on Dec. 26 in Detroit.
-Iowa scored four different ways - pass, rush, punt return, interception return.
-B.J. Lowery is the first Hawkeye ever to return two interceptions for a score in a game.
- Kevonte Martin-Manley is the first Iowa player to return two punts for a touchdown in the same contest. He also tied the Big Ten record which occurred twice, the last time in 1983 by Ohio State's Garcia Lane.
-Maurice Fleming was among a group of players seeing his first game action as a Hawkeye. Ryan Ward and Faith Ekakitie also played for the first time at Iowa. All are redshirt freshmen.
-After carrying the ball 30 and 35 times, respectively, in the last two games, Mark Weisman toted it 10 times for 43 yards on Saturday. Jordan Canzeri and LeShun Daniels each accumulated 13 carries to pace the Hawkeyes.
-James Morris led a balanced defensive attack with seven tackles, including one for loss. Fellow starting linebacker Anthony Hitchens chipped in with six stops, including one for loss.
-Jacob Hillyer recorded a touchdown reception for a second week in a row. Saturday's came from 21 yards out.
-Tanner Miller picked off his second pass of the season. The free safety came up with both interceptions in the end zone.
-Iowa employed a lot of second and third-team players once the contest was well in hand. Nico Law and Anthony Gair served as the back-up safeties with Sean Draper and Fleming at corner. Travis Perry, Quinton Alston, Marcus Collins and Spearman played linebacker. Ekakitie, Jaleel Johnson and Nate Meier saw a lot of reps up front on defense.
Offensively, the second-team line looked like (from L-R): Andrew Donnal, Nolan MacMillan, Eric Simmons, Jordan Walsh and Ryan Ward. Walsh started but remained in the game with the back-ups, likely to get more seasoning.
