IOWA CITY, Iowa After a tiring trip back from the Bahamas during the weekend, Iowa needed a pick-me-up. The Hawkeyes received it Tuesday night with a raucous, sold-out crowd at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

A veteran Notre Dame team playing on the road for the first time this season found an answer every time the Hawkeyes positioned themselves to pull away. The Irish overcame a nine-point halftime deficit with a 17-6 run after the intermission.

Iowa clung to a 78-77 lead with about four minutes to play. The majority of the 15,400 fans in Carver-Hawkeye Arena were feeling like Apollo Creed after knocking down Rocky multiple times only to have him get up again.

The Hawkeyes outlasted the underdog Irish, 98-93, to send the Blackout crowd home happy. It was probably a good thing the game was played in the friendly confines of CHA.

Road-weary Iowa needed all hands on deck after their trip back from the Battle 4 Atlantis was delayed about 12 hours. It was aided by a 39-7 advantage in bench points.

"Their depth wore on is, no question, not only in transition but on the backboard," Notre Dame Coach Mike Brey said. "We shortened our bench a little bit and it helped us with offensive efficiency but fatigue maybe caught up with us a little bit at times."

And there was the Iowa fans screaming at them for 40 minutes,

"The crowd was amazing," Iowa Senior Devyn Marble said. "The sold-out student section was awesome. The blackout thing was neat and creative. They definitely gave us the energy to finish the game. "

Marble sparked an Iowa team that came out sluggish to start the second half. After the Irish took a 57-55 lead with 15:33 left to play in the second half, the senior connected on a three-pointer to begin a stretch where he scored 13 in a row for the No. 23 Hawkeyes (8-1).

"Dev's run was the difference in the game," Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said.

Marble finished with 17 points. Aaron White scored 20 (now has 1,001 for his Iowa career), grabbed seven rebounds and handed out a career-best seven assists for the winners. Jarrod Uthoff added 17 and six off of the bench.

The Hawkeyes shot 33 of 58 (56.9 percent) from the floor, including 7 of 13 (53.8 percent) from behind the arc. They held a 36 to 26 advantage in rebounds.

Notre Dame (5-2) held a 20-4 edge in points off turnovers with only seven of them to the Hawkeyes' 12. The Irish also enjoyed a 50-38 advantage on points in the paint, in large part because center Garrick Sherman scored a game-high 29 points on 12 of 18 shooting from the field.

Iowa returns to action Saturday night when it faces Drake as part of the Big Four Classic in Des Moines (7:30 p.m., Mediacom, BTN.com).
