Jordan Bernstine, a 4-star safety out of Lincoln HS in Des Moines, Iowa has decided to play football for Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Read comments from Jordan about his commitment, talking with Coach Ferentz, and what Iowa fans should expect from him in this free recruiting update.

Jordan Bernstine, the 2nd highest-rated recruit in the 2007 class from the state of Iowa has made a verbal commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes. The 4-star safety out of Lincoln HS in Des Moines had offers from man schools, including UCLA, Nebraska, Pittsburgh, and Iowa State.

“It’s where I felt most comfortable,” Bernstine said. “I really liked UCLA, but I decided I could see myself playing at Iowa for the next 4 or 5 years.”

Bernstine said he had sat down with his mother at the beginning of his holiday break and made the decision to become a Hawkeye. His mother had always been a big proponent of the Hawkeyes, with them being so close to home.

Another possible influence on his decision is the opportunity for playing time, with Iowa being rather thin at safety right now.

“(The depth chart) was a little bit of the deciding factor,” Bernstine said. “I’d have a chance to work for a (starting) spot.”

Bernstine said California had made a late charge at recruiting him, but most schools knew he was set on one his top 5.

Bernstine took his visit to Iowa on December 8th, when many other current Iowa commitments were also on their visit.

“All the other (Iowa verbals) were there, telling me little things here and there,” Bernstine said. “But we just went out and had a good time.”

Bernstine spoke with Coach Kirk Ferentz on Friday morning to tell him the good news before announcing his decision publicly on KCCI TV that evening.

“(Coach Ferentz) said he’s happy he’ll be getting the chance to coach me,” Bernstine said.

Iowa has had a run of good safeties, with Sean Considine and Bob Sanders both starting in the NFL, when healthy. What skills does Bernstine hope to bring to a celebrated position at Iowa.

“I like to hit, and can play man to man if they need me to cover a receiver,” he said.
