Leaderboard: Iowa Athletics in 06-07

When Athletic Director Gary Barta arrived at Iowa late last summer, one of the goals he set forth was for every athletic team at the University to be competitive and to strive for championships. The final standings from all 24 varsity mens and womens teams have been tabulated. The verdict? There is a lot of work to do.

-During the 2006-2007 academic year, the Iowa men participated in 11 varsity sports.  They finished in the bottom half of the league in seven of those sports.  They finished in the bottom third in seven sports.  They finished last, or next to last, in five sports.  Iowa failed to win any regular season championship in any men’s sport, with their best finish being in a tie for third in wrestling, and a tie for fourth in baseball and basketball.
