Freeman To Leave Iowa

Posted May 2, 2008

IOWA CITY, IA - - Iowa junior guard Tony Freeman has asked for, and been granted, a release from his basketball scholarship at the University of Iowa. Freeman will not be a member of the Hawkeye basketball program next season.

The announcement was made Friday by Associate Athletic Director Fred Mims, who also is Director of the UI’s Office of Student Services and Compliance.

“Tony informed us of his decision that he will complete his college career elsewhere,” said Iowa basketball Coach Todd Lickliter. “Tony worked hard to come back from his injury last season and we appreciate the effort he provided throughout the course of the year. We wish him nothing but success in the future.”

Freeman (6-1, 190) is a native of Maywood, IL, where he attended St. Joseph’s HS. He missed Iowa’s first 10 games last season after suffering a stress fracture in a pre-season exhibition game. In 22 games, Freeman averaged 13.8 points and 3.1 rebounds. He shot 37.6% from the field, 38.3% from three-point range and 69% from the free throw line while averaging 3.2 assists.

In three seasons with the Hawkeyes, Freeman played in 86 games, with 40 starts. He scored 648 career points (7.5 avg.) and totaled 200 rebounds, 240 assists and 74 steals. His shooting percentages include 37.7% from the field, 35.8% from three-point range and 68.6% from the free throw line.
