Dubuque Wahlert kicker Mike Meyer called off an official visit to Iowa State this weekend to accept a preferred walk-on offer from Iowa Tuesday night. He talked with Hawkeye Insider about his decision. Read what he had to say in this recruiting update.

Mike Meyer just finalized his decision on where to attend college, when the phone rang. Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz was on the other end of the line.

“He was just calling to ask how my visit went and how I felt about Iowa,” the Dubuque Wahlert Kicker said. “He didn’t ask whether I was coming there or not. I told him that I had made up my mind to come to Iowa. He has pretty good timing.”

Meyer passed up a partial scholarship at Northern Iowa and a walk-on opportunity at Iowa State to be a preferred walk-on with the Hawkeyes. He was told by the Iowa coaches that he’ll be in the running for the kick-off duties in 2010.

“They said that I will have a spot during the preseason camp in August to compete for the kick-off spot,” Meyer said.

As a senior, Meyer drilled a 56-yard field goal, a Mississippi Valley Conference record. He was 8 of 9 on field goals inside 50, including six from more than 40. Twenty eight of his 30 kickoffs went for touchbacks, which did not include two on-side kicks.

“Personally, I think I’m pretty good at kickoffs, but I’m happy to do both (kickoff and field goals),” Meyer said.

Starting kicker Daniel Murray returns in ’10 for his senior season, while redshirt sophomore Trent Mossbrucker will be back as well. Meyer said he feels comfortable out to 50 yards on field goals.

“I’m not sure what I can do going from the tee to the ground,” Meyer said. “I also haven’t kicked outside much.”

Meyer officially visited Iowa last weekend. He left Iowa City on Sunday expecting to visit Iowa State this week. That’s been called off.

“I just sat down with my parents and felt comfortable with everything at Iowa,” Meyer said.

Meyer grew up rooting for the Hawkeyes, but he tried to keep an open mind while selecting a college.

“I’ve always dreamed of playing at Iowa, but I kept my options open during recruiting,” Meyer said. “After going through the process, Iowa came out on top.”
