For some players, making a decision about their future school can be tough. For Monroeville (PA) product Dondi Kirby, it's been extremely hard. The Scout.com nationally ranked No. 11 cornerback was expected to have his list trimmed to a handful of schools by this time of the year, but no one is out of the running at this point.
"I have been talking with my coaches about schools that I like, I have some favorites, but no one has officially been cut or anything," stated Kirby to HawkeyeInsider.com. "I have about seven or eight schools that stick out in my mind. USC, Ohio State, Florida, Iowa, Maryland, North Carolina, Illinois, and Louisville, all sort of there."
A 6-foot-2, 200-pound cornerback, Kirby already has the size for the college game. It's no wonder that the soon to be senior has nearly 20 offers.
"I would like to start narrowing it down over the rest of the summer. I'm going to take some visits throughout July and August," said Kirby. "Location doesn't really matter to me, but my dad wants me to stay close. In the end, I told him that it's my decision."
With so many schools offering Kirby, coaching staffs around the country are just trying to get the prospect in on a visit, including Iowa.
"They have been telling me that I should visit for a while. I'm actually planning a visit to them in the near future. My coach has been telling me that I should try to head over that way and knock two schools out in one trip," said Kirby. "I talk to Iowa a lot. I was actually supposed to talk to them (Thursday), but I got really busy, so I'm going to call them (Friday)."
Kirby has given Scout.com evaluators a tough time this summer. A talented wide out, he could project to play many positions at the college level including: safety, linebacker, receiver, and cornerback. Currently, the Hawkeyes are recruiting the 2011 recruit as a member of the secondary.
"They say I could make a big impact on the defensive side of the football for them," said Kirby. "I don't know a lot, but I know they are a great school. They won a BCS game last year and had a great record. I have a pretty good relationship with the coaches. It's definitely a school I want to check out more in the future."
So what is the Scout.com 4-star corner looking for in his future school?
"I want to see what the players say about the program. The pros and cons of the school. There are some coaches that will tell you anything to get you to come there, and I want to see what the players are saying. I don't want to be at a place where it's not like I thought."
Dondi Kirby is finding it difficult eliminating prospective schools from his list. He's still gathering information on the contenders. Part of the process, he hopes, will include a visit to Iowa. The Hawkeyes rate as one of the top teams for his services. HI.com's Josh Harvey spoke with Kirby recently to find out where Iowa stands.
